‘Another years over and a new ones just begun’
So goes the words of a very famous John Lennon song and sets us up for the adventure of the new year with all the hope we can muster
I must admit that getting older tends to bring out in you a certain reflection on things generally especially where you can see changes in society .These changes make you wonder what we have lost
Near Christmas a serious tragedy befell a family with their home catching fire and four members of the family losing their lives The father received serious burns and was hospitalized and was in a most serious condition The very worst thing that could happen
In an earlier times help would be offered by people in a meaningful way without fanfare and without making a public spectacle of the family’s grief How things have changed !
Grief is now seems to be public property with television intrusion into the most minute details of the victims lives Tribute walls of flowers being publicized, expressions of sorrow by neighbors, friends, school kids, double page stories in the major metropolitan papers and the list goes on Counselors arrive by the bus load for adults and even the local school children have this service offered to them.
I do not wish to diminish the full horror of what has occurred to these folk but what have we become of a society in more recent times
It seems to be that we have almost reached the level of grief voyeurism.
